Have you checked the rules for flying with your PET close to you?

Type of PET, minimum age, and total weight:

Only dogs or cats can travel, starting from 4 months old and weighing up to 10kg (including PET and carrier).

Quantity:

  • Each person can only bring 1 PET during the flight.
  • In total, up to 3 PETS per flight are allowed on trips within Brazil.
  • On flights outside Brazil, up to 5 PETS are allowed (4 in the Economy cabin and 1 in the Business cabin).

* (On flights from Brazil to the United States, dogs are not allowed on board)

* (Azul does not carry an emotional support dog)

Carrier Size and Material:

  • It must be a maximum of 20 cm in height, 31.5 cm in width, and 43 cm in length.
  • Rigid carriers must be made of durable fiber or plastic.
  • Flexible carriers should be waterproof, with internal metal rods to reinforce the structure.
  • Other materials such as wood and straw cannot board.

Where the PET cannot travel:

on the passenger's lap or outside the carrier.

Care with the PET:

it must be clean, healthy, and smell good.

PET Documentation:

needs to be up to date.

Attention: each of these rules is important for your PET to travel more comfortably and safely with you. Therefore, if any are not met, Azul may refuse the animal's boarding.

There are some recommendations for the carrier that help improve your PET's flight experience.

Check out:

  • The size should be enough for your PET to stand and move inside it. A good tip is to check if the animal can turn 360° around itself;
  • The surface must have openings to allow air to enter and circulate. Thus, your PET can breathe better;
  • It's important that the carrier doesn't open accidentally. Therefore, it needs to have a locking device, whether inside or outside;
  • The internal floor should be lined with a material that contains and absorbs urine and feces, to prevent leakage during the flight;
  • The carrier must be clean, disinfected, and sterilized, to prevent the spread of diseases to the animal itself and other people.

Remember: you are responsible for providing the carrier, right? With the recommendations, you can already choose the best equipment to take your PET on the flight comfortably and safely.

What Documents Do I Need to Carry for My PET to Travel?

To board, you need to show that your PET is healthy and well-cared for. So, carry:

The following documents are mandatory for all domestic Azul destinations:

  • Proof of rabies vaccination, under the following conditions: Animals over 90 days old must be vaccinated against rabies;
  • Animals vaccinated for the first time in their lives must travel only after 21 days have passed since the vaccination, so that there is time for the immunological effect to take effect;
  • Animals previously vaccinated against rabies may travel immediately, without the need to wait a few days for the immunological effect to take effect;
  • Vaccination administered less than 1 year before the date of embarkation;
  • The proof must include the type of vaccine, the laboratory that produced it and the batch/vial number used.
  • Animal Health Certificate, issued by a veterinarian, valid for up to 10 days from the date of issue.

ATTENTION: Do you have a trip between the United States and Brazil? In this case, Azul's pet in-cabin service for dogs is only available on trips from the USA to Brazil, as well as for guide dogs and service dogs.

The transportation of dogs on flights from Brazil to the USA is temporarily suspended by order of the CDC (Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, the US health and prevention agency), due to the local canine rabies outbreak.

For cats, the service is available normally, whether departing from or returning to the United States.

For transporting cats to the USA, you need to bring:

  • Veterinary certificate stating that the animal is healthy and fit to fly, issued no more than 10 days before the travel date.
  • Valid rabies vaccine (mandatory for the state of Florida). The vaccine certificate must be in English or accompanied by a certified translation.
  • It is also worth noting that only animals over 6 months of age are accepted. Additionally, the use of a microchip (or PIT tag, an identification chip for your pet) is mandatory.

For more information, consult the United States Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service website.

This guide from PetRelocation can also help you.

For pet entry into Brazil:

  • For the entry of dogs and cats, it is necessary to present an International Veterinary Certificate (CVI) or Passport (recognized by MAPA) issued by the Veterinary Authority of the country of origin meeting Brazil's sanitary requirements.
  • Official pet passports are accepted only from countries that reciprocally accept the Brazilian Pet Passport. At this time, the European Pet Passport is not valid for entry into Brazil

Prohibited: The transportation of any type of animal from South and Central America is prohibited.

Portugal

To board, it is necessary to show that your pet is healthy and well cared for. Therefore, bring:

  • Updated Vaccination Card and rabies vaccine;
  • CZI (International Zoosanitary Certificate);
  • Veterinary Certificate stating that the animal is fit to fly;
  • Rabies Serology: At least 30 days after the first vaccination and with the animal already identified. Travel with the animal is only allowed 3 months after blood collection.
  • Form to notify the arrival of non-commercial dogs and cats: must be sent by the customer via email to Traveler Entry Points, at least 48 business hours before arrival. The emails for submission are available on the website of the Directorate-General for Food and Veterinary (DGVA). In the case of Lisbon, the address is pcflisboaa@dgav.pt;
  • Portuguese authorities require a document issued by DGAV (Directorate-General for Food and Veterinary) to be presented at check-in, which is a veterinary certificate for dogs and cats destined for Brazil. This document is required for all animals with a return period of more than 60 days or local animals;
  • Proof of microchip or tattoo implantation for animal identification purposes before the rabies vaccination or on the same date as the identification. Vaccination done before microchipping is not valid for the European Union.

For return/entry into Brazil:

  • International Veterinary Certificate (CVI) or Passport (recognized by MAPA) issued by the Veterinary Authority of the country of origin meeting Brazil's sanitary requirements;
  • The European Pet Passport is not valid for entry into Brazil.

France

For trips to France, the additional documents are:

  • Updated Vaccination Card and rabies vaccine;
  • CZI (International Zoosanitary Certificate);
  • Veterinary Certificate stating that the animal is fit to fly;
  • Rabies serology with a result greater than or equal to 0.5 IU/ml;
  • Customers who have left France with a pet originating from the EU that has a European pet passport and did not need to be revaccinated against rabies during their stay abroad to be up to date with the vaccination schedule, the animal will be exempt from the requirement to present the CVI and may enter the EU only with the pet passport. Otherwise (revaccination abroad), the normal procedure must be followed;
  • For these trips, the microchip (or PIT tag, an identification chip for your pet) is also mandatory.

For return/entry into Brazil:

  • International Veterinary Certificate (CVI) or Passport (recognized by MAPA) issued by the Veterinary Authority of the country of origin meeting Brazil's sanitary requirements;
  • The European Pet Passport is not valid for entry into Brazil.

Find more information about returning to France with pets on the website of the French Embassy in Brazil.

If your trip passes through Uruguay, there are some requirements and restrictions you must follow:

  • Updated rabies vaccination for dogs and cats (the vaccination card must contain the vaccination date, type, series, and brand of the vaccine);
  • CVI - International Veterinary Certificate issued no more than 10 days before the trip;
  • Internal and external deworming, with date and product applied, carried out within 15 days prior to the issuance of the CVI;
  • EXCLUSIVE FOR DOGS: Uruguay will NOT authorize the entry of animals previously diagnosed with leishmaniasis into its territory;
  • For dogs coming from Brazil, proof of a negative immune response to leishmaniasis (IFAT, ELISA, or direct agglutination test) or detection of the agent (by molecular methods) is mandatory, within a period not exceeding 60 days prior to the dog's entry into Uruguay.

If the stay is less than 30 days:

  • The customer may return with the same entry certificate, provided that the validity is indicated. Otherwise, they will have to redo the certification.
  • Animals must be free of symptoms and signs of infectious and parasitic diseases.

MANDATORY: Non-resident dogs must enter and leave the country identified with a microchip, which will be associated with the International Health Certificate (CVI) issued by the health authority of the country of origin.

  • Updated rabies vaccination for dogs and cats (the vaccination card must contain the vaccination date, type, series, and brand of the vaccine);
  • CVI - International Veterinary Certificate issued no more than 10 days before the trip;
  • Deworming Certificate - Treatment against internal and external parasites within 15 days before the issuance date of the CVI. (The SENASA website does not mention a certificate but describes the procedure as mandatory).

As it is an Environmental Preservation Area (APA), you also need to present an Animal Entry Authorization, in addition to the documentation we've already talked about. This document is issued by the Secretary of Environment and Tourism of Fernando de Noronha.

To get your authorization, you need to send the
 filled-out form from the NVA (Animal Surveillance Center) of Fernando de Noronha to vigilancia.saude@noronha.pe.gov.br. It is necessary to do this at least 30 days before your trip and wait for approval or disapproval of your PET's entry.

Remember: se seu formulário for aprovado, ele tem validade de 30 dias. E, se passar do prazo, você deve renová-lo.

In addition to the documentation we've already talked about, you also need authorization, as it is a forest reserve under the responsibility of the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio). The authorization is to allow your PET to enter the airport area and must be requested in advance.

To request your authorization, just contact the ICMBio Institute via email:

autorizacoes.embarque.cks@icmbio.gov.br.

In the email, inform:

  • Owner and PET data (full name, address, CPF, animal breed);
  • Flight date and origin/destination;
  • Original Animal Health Certificate, signed by a qualified veterinarian;
  • Official identification document with a photo of the air ticket holder;
  • Original document of the animal's vaccination card.

Look where your PET will go with you inside the flight!

Here at Azul, your PET travels below the seat in front of you, to stay even closer to you.

And, to ensure even more comfort and safety, our aircraft have specific seats for the PET in the cabin service. Check it out:

Regardless of the type of your PET's carrier (rigid or flexible), the seats for you on flights in Brazil vary according to the aircraft:

On ATR, Embraer E1, and E2 aircraft: you can choose between window seats, except those at the emergency exits, in the first three or last three rows.

On A320/A321 aircraft: you can also choose between window seats, except those at the emergency exits, in the first two or last two rows.

On flights outside Brazil, the seats for you and your PET also vary according to the aircraft, regardless of the type of carrier (rigid or flexible):

On ATR, Embraer E1, and E2 aircraft: you can choose between window seats, except those at the emergency exits, in the first three or last three rows.

On A320/A321 aircraft: you can also choose between window seats, except those at the emergency exits, in the first two or last two rows.

However, on some aircraft, your PET is only allowed to travel in a flexible carrier. Therefore, the seats are different:

On A330CEO/NEO aircraft: if your cabin is Economy or Economy Extra, you can choose between window seats, starting from the third row. For Business customers, seats 2C-H / 4C-H / 6C-H / 8C-H (on the A330CEO aircraft) and 1C-H / 3C-H / 5C (on the A330NEO aircraft) are available.

Attention: for safety reasons, the PET in the cabin service is not available on flights operated by Azul Conecta.

Let's Help Your PET Have a Good Experience Together?

We've separated some tips for everything to go well with your flight:

Before the Flight

How about helping your PET get used to the carrier 15 days in advance? Encouraging him to eat inside the box is a good tip. Going to the vet to check his health and ask for some recommendations will also help.

During the Flight

If you notice that your PET is agitated, try petting and calling him by name to calm him down. You can also leave a toy he likes inside the carrier or even a piece of your clothing. Thus, with your scent, he feels more secure. And, of course, always count on the help of our crew, right?

After the Flight

Take some time to help your PET get used to the new environment after disembarking. Walk with him, give affection and attention, until he feels more comfortable. Avoid busier places during this time. The most important thing for your PET will be your company!

Frequently Asked Questions

The limits are to ensure a safer flight for your PET and you. As Azul does not transport pets in the aircraft hold, the PETS go with their owners in the cabin, in a carrier below the seat in front. This space is delimited, and the recommended measures are designed so that your PET fits in it more comfortably.

Yes, because the measurements represent the exact size of the carrier that fits in the space indicated for PET transport in the cabin, which is below the seat in front.

The pet needs to travel with a person, never alone. Therefore, it is always necessary to buy a ticket for an adult with the PET in the cabin service fee.

For the PET in the cabin service, Azul only allows the transport of dogs and cats.

You can! As long as the puppy has already completed 4 months, which is the minimum age allowed. Litters with puppies between 4 and 6 months can also be transported in the same container, provided the mother travels and up to 2 puppies.

Remember: puppies will need more attention during the flight due to their short life span.

On flights in Brazil, the passenger and their PET must present themselves at the check-in counter 2 hours before boarding. On flights outside Brazil, it is 3 hours in advance. The animal must stay inside the carrier both in the boarding room, during the flight, and in the disembarkation room. Inside the aircraft, the crew will give instructions on where and how to position the carrier.

For safety reasons, the boarding of unaccompanied minors with pets is not allowed, nor with a lap child. If these passengers are traveling with another person, it is necessary to ask her to take responsibility for the PET.
