About Special Luggage

This type of luggage has dimensions or weights above what is allowed to be normally checked in. Therefore, it has specific rules.

On this page, you will find which items are included in the luggage allowance and which have a service fee to be transported, as well as luggage not accepted.

Items Included in the Luggage Allowance

Some equipment or objects can be transported without needing to pay a service fee, as they are already part of your luggage allowance. Check out which ones below.

Sports Equipment

  • Tent
  • Camping Equipment
  • Airsoft Equipment¹
  • Fishing Equipment
  • Mountaineering Backpack
  • Tennis Racket
  • Sleeping Bag
  • Bowling Bag

¹ Airsoft equipment cannot be carried in hand luggage (ANAC Resolution No. 515/2019), must be checked and packed in a case or cases suitable for transport that can be sealed.

Electronics

  • 1 television*/monitor up to 26" weighing less than 23kg

*We only board the TV/monitor if it is in the original factory packaging (the televisions and/or monitors must be packed in their appropriate boxes).

If you need to transport this electronic equipment, you need to pay attention to some recommendations.

Before traveling, you need to check if your device was affected by an old battery fault, identified in some products of this model manufactured between September 2015 and February 2017 by Apple. To check if your 15-inch MacBook Pro has this battery fault, consult this Apple page.

This is a recommendation from the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC), more information available here.

Items with a Service Fee for Transportation

For some special luggage to be transported, it is necessary to pay an additional service fee.

This fee varies according to the origin or destination of your trip:

On flights in Brazil, the fee is BRL 250.00

On international flights to/from South America, the fee is BRL 370.00

On international flights to/from the United States and Europe, the fee is BRL 790.00

² bicycles must be in rigid cases, with the handlebars folded and the pedals removed.
³ Musical instruments must be transported in a rigid case. Guitar and violin can be transported in the (luggage compartment), but these items replace the hand luggage of up to 10kg.

Electronics

  • 1 television*/monitor between 26" and 64" weighing up to 23kg

*We only board the TV/monitor if it is in the original factory packaging (the televisions and/or monitors must be packed in their appropriate boxes).

To transport bicycles, you must follow some specific rules:

  • The bicycle must be placed in rigid protective cases or well packaged to avoid damage;
  • The handlebars must be folded and the pedals removed;
  • If the weight exceeds 23kg, the excess luggage fee will be charged, in addition to the additional service fee;
  • To transport more than one bicycle, each must be inside its own protective case. Trying to take 2 bicycles in the same case can result in 2 service fees or 1 fee + excess luggage

In the case of flights originating or destined for the United States, you need to pay attention to some details. If the bicycle is not very well packaged and protected, boarding may be denied. Additionally, it is recommended that the item be in the original factory packaging or with a protective case. This way, you avoid the United States airport security from opening it.

Surfboards, windsurf, stand-up, kite surf, and other modalities also have specific rules for transportation:

  • The maximum length for a surfboard is 3.20m. Only in the case of ATR flights (smaller aircraft, for fewer passengers), the maximum limit is 1.90m;
  • There is no limit to the number of boards per customer, but the number can affect the total value of the fees (see more below). Additionally, the transport capacity of the aircraft's hold must be considered. It is possible that not all boards can be boarded on the same flight.

The total service fee value may vary according to the number of items to be transported or with the weight:

  • Up to 3 boards in a single bag: 1 fee is charged;
  • More than 3 boards in a single bag: 1 fee for the bag with 3 boards + a fee for each extra board;
  • 3 boards, each in a bag: 3 fees are charged.

Remember: if the bag exceeds 23kg, an excess luggage fee is charged, in addition to the service fee. The maximum weight allowed for 1 bag is 45kg for any destination. Only in Europe is the limit different (32 kg per bag).

It is also worth remembering that the fins of the equipment must be protected with a rigid support to prevent breakage. They can also be removed from the board if you prefer.

Items That Cannot Be Transported

Due to some restrictions, some objects or equipment are not accepted for transport. Check out below:

Sports Equipment

  • Hang Glider
  • Boats
  • Kayaks
  • Canoes
  • Large Cubic Equipment
  • Motorized Paraglider
  • Pole Jump
  • Windsurfing

Electronics

  • Televisions/monitors above 64" or weighing more than 23kg

This equipment cannot be transported due to the lack of safety and the risk it poses to air transport. This restriction is valid for both flights in Brazil and international flights.

Magnetic objects are considered dangerous articles because they can interfere with some aircraft equipment, which puts the safety of the flight at risk.

In special luggage, the most common magnetic materials are the speakers present in sound equipment, amplifiers, or acoustic boxes.

However, they can still be transported, provided they follow specific rules. The equipment must have up to 95 cm in measurement (adding length, width, and height) and each passenger can only transport 1 per flight. Items that exceed these measurements must be transported by Azul Cargo, the Azul front responsible for this type of cargo, with insurance and its own rules.

Azul may refuse luggage that jeopardizes the safety of the flight, the structure of the aircraft, or cannot be transported, such as:

  • Items that are outside the limits of measurement and weight;

  • Dangerous articles;

  • Live cargo;

  • Biological material (tissues, urine, water for tests, etc.);

  • Valuable objects (gold, silver, platinum, precious and semi-precious stones, money, check, transport voucher, shares, stamps, credit cards, electronics, "selfie stick", among others).

Frequently Asked Questions

The maximum value is 1,131 SDR (SDR = Special Drawing Rights), which is the indemnity limit. If the goods in your luggage exceed this value, Azul will not transport it.

To find out how much your luggage is worth in SDR currency, just convert the value of the item here on the Central Bank of Brazil's website.

If any item in your luggage exceeds the SDR value limit, contact Azul Cargo's customer service at (11) 4003-8399. This is the Azul front responsible for this type of transport, with insurance and its own rules.

To carry or check weapons during a flight, you must follow the following steps:

  1. Access the Federal Police system and request boarding or check-in through the completion of the GEPAR (Armed Passenger Boarding Guide) or GDAF (Firearm Dispatch Guide) forms.

  2. On the day of the flight, go to the Federal Police unit, its representation at the airport, or the indicated address to present the required documentation and obtain the authorization of your guide, which will be given electronically.

  3. After obtaining the authorization, you must go to the airline counter to finalize your check-in or weapon check-in.

These rules have been valid since 07/28/2018.

In these cases, we recommend that you access the website or contact the company directly to consult their rules and restrictions related to luggage.

If you want to know if you can transport an object or not, for example, you need to verify this information with the companies involved in your trip. If it is allowed in all, you must follow the rules of each one for transportation.
